Bush dog (Speothos venaticus) density estimates in the Kanuku Mountains
The first density estimate for the protected area, built from 4,100 camera-trap nights.

Records cluster in secondary forest near creek crossings.
We present the first density estimate for bush dogs in the Kanuku Mountains, based on 4,100 camera-trap nights across three transects between 2024 and 2026.
Records were concentrated in secondary forest and near creek crossings, with almost no detections in unbroken primary forest away from water.
The estimate is low and the confidence interval wide, which is normal for a species that moves in small groups and avoids open ground. It is a baseline, not a verdict.
