New Cryptic Canid Species Documented in the Kanuku MountainsSpeothos umbrinu, the Shadow Bush Dog
Camera-trap footage from southern Guyana reveals a previously unknown dark-furred bush dog variant
Last Tuesday, a field technician reviewing camera-trap footage from a remote stretch of secondary forest in the Kanuku Mountains Protected Area, southern Guyana, noticed something unusual. At 4:17 a.m., a small, dark canid stepped into the frame. At first it looked like a bush dog, but the proportions were off — denser black fur, slightly shorter legs, and noticeably larger rounded ears.
The animal stayed in view for only eleven seconds before disappearing back into the undergrowth.
“The ear shape and coat density are distinct enough that we cannot comfortably place it within existing Speothos variation.”
When the clip was shared with two local biologists working in the Kanuku Mountains, they flagged it immediately. The coloration and ear shape did not match any known Speothos population in the region. A second camera on the same transect captured the animal again three nights later.
A short preliminary note was written up under the temporary name Speothos umbrinu — the Shadow Bush Dog. Genetic sampling has not yet been possible. For now the only evidence is the footage and a handful of still frames.
The exact location within the protected area remains undisclosed to avoid disturbance. The team is currently seeking permission for a limited follow-up survey.
