Harpy eagle nesting success in protected forest fragments

Four active nests were monitored through the season; two fledged young.

Harpy eagles nest in emergents above 30 m.

Four active harpy eagle nests were monitored in protected forest fragments through the last breeding season. Two pairs fledged young; one failed at the egg stage, and one nest was abandoned.

All four nests were in emergent trees above 30 m, in fragments larger than 400 hectares. The abandoned nest was in the smallest fragment surveyed.

Fragment size is not the whole story, but it remains the best predictor we have. Monitoring continues with a fifth nest found in September.
