Preliminary notes on a possible new Mycena species in the Kanuku Mountains

Morphology, habitat notes and a first sequence from a small pale-spored Mycena collected on decaying hardwood.

Priya NauthForest Dispatch

A small Mycena mushroom growing on decaying wood.
A Mycena fruiting on decaying hardwood.

This note describes a small pale-spored Mycena collected on decaying hardwood in the Kanuku Mountains, at roughly 240 m elevation, in closed secondary forest.

The cap is 9 to 14 mm across and visibly translucent when wet. The stipe carries fine hairs near the base, which distinguishes it from the two Mycena species already recorded from the Guiana Shield.

A single sequence has been obtained. We are not proposing a name until more material is examined, and we would welcome comment from anyone working on the group in the region.
