Secondary Forest Regeneration Study
Eighteen permanent plots tracking how secondary forest in the Kanukus recovers after clearing, from soil microbes to canopy birds.
Eighteen permanent plots span three ages of secondary forest, from five to thirty years since clearing. Each is sampled for vegetation structure, soil microbiome and bird assemblages.
The study was designed around a simple question the region cannot yet answer: how long does it take for a cleared patch in the Guiana Shield to function like forest again?
Early vegetation results suggest structure recovers faster than composition. The plots will run for at least a decade.
